The SDSFIE family of standards in intended to apply specifically to the DoD I&E community as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers civil works community and any other DoD organization mandated to use SDSFIE as specified in the DoD IT Standards Registry (DISR). Other interested organizations are encouraged, but not required to use these standards as they see fit.
In September, 2011 the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OUSD(AT&L), IC/IN) granted full permission for the SDSFIE standard to be shared with the governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. This permission extends to the use of the data standard and associated tools, and does not imply unrestricted sharing of US DoD data. The Ministries of Defence for each of these nations have expressed interest in using and further developing (adapting) SDSFIE, which would benefit all parties involved by making our data more interoperable and by fostering a broader user community to draw input from.
